John’s Amazing Pizza has won the $20 million (£13.7m) “Super Bowl of Pizza” award at the world’s largest pizza competition, the Food & Wine Festival in France.
The event, which saw more than 500,000 people sample some of the world the most iconic pizza, took place in Lyon, France, and is being held at the French city’s iconic St. Louis Cathedral.
John’s won the title of “Super Champ” in 2016, for their “Deluxe Special” of pizzas, which included a “Pizza” pizza, topped with butter, cream cheese and bacon.
It’s the first time the winner has been crowned “Super” since 2004, when a pizza named “Super Pizza” was named “World’s Best” by the British newspaper The Times.
After the awards ceremony, which was livestreamed live, the pizza maker took to Instagram to congratulate its win, tweeting: “We’ve been here before, we’ve been through this before and it’s going to be tough to beat that!”
Pizza was also the subject of a video in which a pizza maker named “John” told the audience that it was a “very special moment” for him, to which the audience replied “we love it”.
A spokesperson for John’s said in a statement: “Our experience with this event was great.
It was a really good way to meet our fans and get to know each other.”
It was the first year that John’s was not named as “World Champ” as they were not awarded the title until 2016.
The winning pizzas were named after John’s son, who was also awarded the “SuperChamp” title.
